i love the quote from Deresiewicz.  I absolutely need a quiet, creatively fertile environment for my ideas to germinate.  Associations need to find each other.  The first thoughts are always what i have heard somewhere else.  The original ideas rise from the slow process of simmering gathered information and seeing what floats to the top.

Hi Beth - I was thinking about you when I ran across this NYT's piece last week too. While I've never been accused of being an introvert, I've always felt that privacy was critical to real productivity and creativity. I'm always baffled by open floor plans and "group-think" in organizations that simultaneously complain about too many meetings and not enough time to get things done. Thanks for posting this, a good topic!

David, you make an excellent point about too many meetings and too little time - so true! Group processes are not always the most efficient, and open floor plans don't mean that your organization is "flat" (no hierarchy), hip or knows how to stimulate effective collaboration. I can imagine that even with a strength of working in groups, even extroverts would eventually become overwhelmed at the volume of information we're expected to process in teams!

I've known for a long time, Beth, that there is a ME in team.
