I agree with you, that is a great quote. And it's not denying the existance of fear either.

"Just do it" always bothered me; if I could just do it I would have done it. I believe in exploring fears and unraveling them instead of trying to just get over them instantaneously with a succinct, catchy tagline. (Do I sound angry? :-p)

A small example of getting through a fear was taking the stairs in my apartment building:

The elevators are scary. They keep needing to be fixed on a regular basis and I was told by a neighbor that they don't even make parts for them anymore. So I started taking the stairs. When I get to the 2nd floor the stairwell gets really, really creepy. It's a little darker with a weird buzzing noise from the one light down there. I thought that I would get used to it if I did it a few times. But I would get there and decide to take the elevator to the first floor in order to leave the building instead of just taking the fire door directly out.

Well, one time I got down to the second floor, right before the creepiness, and I suddenly thought to myself: "I'm a courageous woman. I can do this." I barely broke my stride down the stairs at that point. Ever since it's been easy to go down there. And I get extra exercise! Yay! :-D

A bigger example is that I want to get into a $3000 business coaching program. I don't want a credit card and everyone strongly warns against it. If I'm accepted I fully intend to get one and do my best to use it smartly. It's because I want to love my business and I want others to love their lives through coaching with me.

I love that old saying about love answering the door and fear not being there. Beautiful.

Thanks for writing this, Beth! :-)

Hi beth buelow , I get what you're saying and I think you are definitely not alone in feeling an incongruent message between "Be fearless" and what actually happens emotionally/chemically in our bodies.

In fact, we cannot be fearless, just like we cannot NOT be/have any emotion.

However, I'm glad that you enjoyed the conference and even though you bristled at the exhortation to 'be fearless,' you didn't throw the baby out with the bath water.

I think the gem hidden underneath this expression is what I choose to believe is the intention behind it. In most cases, what we entrepreneurs fear is not actually fear, but rather a discomfort or irrational feeling that something is wrong with us or we don't want to be made a fool of, and so on.......all that ego-based stuff that ultimately keeps us stuck in, well, . . . stuckness.

Hearing "Be fearless" in that context -- after all, true fear would be a natural reaction triggering the fight-or-flight response -- means seeing "fear" as the impostor it is and making the phone call anyway, going to that networking event anyway, or asking for help from a colleague even though we'd rather shrink back in embarrassment or pride.
